Telling Stories Festival
Telling Stories is an international festival initiated by the Department of Communications, Media and Design at the HSE University in 2018. It zeros in on trends, innovations and the latest advances in media, art, design and the creative industries in general.
2021
For the past three years, the festival has transformed into a platform where leaders and experts in arts, design, communications, and new media and fashion from Russia, Europe, America and other parts of the world share their vision of the topical global trends of the present. Film director Darren Aronofsky, photographer and art director Oliviero Toscani, fashion designer Henrik Vibskov, film and television director Alik Sakharov, director of Musee Galliera Miren Arzalluz, fashion theorist Valerie Steele, popular blogger Oobah Butler, actress Irina Gorbacheva and many others have been special speakers at the Festival.

In 2021, Telling Stories takes on a new quality: now it is not confined to the form of an annual festival; rather, it presents a series of initiatives and events aimed at discussing the topical agenda in the areas of media, design, art, cinema, photography, and fashion.

The festival is turning into a durable platform for representatives of the creative industries. The Festival's community is comprised of participants of various generations, from baby boomers to Generation Z, brought together by their interest in what would happen in the future, and what things the future affects even in present.
This year, the Festival will take place on May 21-22; its program will be shaped around strategic themes, through the prism of which we will try and observe the telling signs of our time:

Living Cosumes
Telling Stories.

NewSchoolOldSchool
Fashion show
On the festival platform, we introduce the audience to the best projects that are relevant to the 2021 Telling Stories topics.

The NewSchoolOldSchool show for students majoring in the Master's program "Fashion" at the School of Design took place at the Rizhsky Railway Station as part of the Moscow "Night of the Arts". In the premises of the Rizhsky Railway Station, graduate students demonstrated new collections created on the basis of references from the Soviet era and the 1990s. To emphasize the importance of connecting generations and expanding the standards of beauty, the show was held with the participation of models of all ages, including the ones from the Oldushka agency.

The show featured collections of first and second year graduate students Ekaterina Ezhukova, Daria Belousova, Anna Korneyenkova, Natalia Motienko, Diana Raimzhanova, created during their studies at the School of Design. The concept of the show involves the participation of non-professional models of all ages, which emphasizes the theme of dialogue between generations.

"We are going to present the premiere of a new story that we call Masters of Arts," announces Anzor Kankulov, curator of the fashion compound. "This is a slightly more serious and design-focused story than our HARD shows, yet we have preserved the same approach: teamwork, a shared approach to presenting collections and focusing on cutting edge, contemporary fashion language."

Generation Z projects
Round table, blitz interview and performance
The first event of the Festival in 2021 was "Generation Z: The Success Project" that included a discussion on the particularities of the project method in education, a blitz interview of the HSE University students with experts from Yandex and Nike on their joint projects, video documentation of the performance and the premiere of a video flash mob.

Opening the discussion on the particularities of the project method, its moderator, well-known journalist and publisher Igor Shulinsky remarked that this method has been applied in European education for a long time yet only recently it was introduced in Russia. Each participant in the discussion outlined their vision of what the project method is.

Director of the HSE Lyceum Dmitry Fishbein reported that in school education, any individual or team work tends to be referred to as 'projects'. Nonetheless, from his viewpoint, it should be only applied to those efforts, most often joint ones, that are commissioned by a customer rather than performed for the sake of getting good marks. Alexandra Kheifets, head of the project school for high school students "Cascade. Project as a Method" and the Deputy Director of the Museum of Moscow, suggested that the search and implementation of an idea be considered a project, stressing that teachers ought to create an environment where children would be able to do this, as they discuss things that are important to them.

Lydia Lobanova, another head of the "Cascade. Project as a method" and the Director on Project Development of the Museum of Cryptography, reported that children aged 14-16, coming to their school, ask what they should do, however, they do not get a ready answer. Instead, they are immersed into the conditions of tough, unlimited uncertainty, they are offered to discard conventional formulas, expectations from the outside world and independently find out their own point of interest. This approach facilitates the development of new markets and new products, helps reshape the infrastructures of our life.

Tatyana Rivchun, Deputy Dean of the Department of Communications, Media and Design at the HSE University, Executive Producer of the Telling Stories Festival, confirmed that the word "project" is coming into fashion and at the same time is kind of trite, so some people today even call their children 'projects'. At the same time, she considers projects to represent a curious measurement system — after all, one can say that life consists of a certain number of projects. And, of course, projects are typical for creative industries. Initially, one of the principles for training designers at HSE University was a project assignment: students study for four years by the Bachelor's curriculum, each year consists of four modules, and each module contains one project, so that each student's training results in 16 projects.

Igor Shulinsky suggested that the young people of today are attracted by fragmentary nature of the project method, when you can get a particular result in one specific practical area, and tomorrow you can move to another area and get some other result there. Daria Fokina, a Gen Z consultant, author and host of the Generation F podcast on AdIndex.ru, agreed with him. "Zoomers love sprints more than marathons," she claimed.

Projects are implemented as part of the joint creative efforts of people of different ages. According to Daria Fokina, in such a situation, each time a teacher should win and confirm their authority. An amiable ambiance in the course of the project accomplishment contributes to the fact that the creator's self-affirmation depends not on their status but on particular achievements, on the value that they can convey to others. Another specific feature of the project activities is the clarity of the set objective: each project participant should realize why they are learning or creating something. This is in contrast to the study of history and literature since the fourth grade, when children do not truly understand why they need it.

As Dmitry Fishbein noted, project activities are of high importance for the younger generation. This is confirmed by his conversations with the lyceum graduates who remember not their math classes but the projects that they themselves fulfilled during the years of study.

At the end of the discussion, students attended meetings with representatives of Yandex and Nike and the premiere of the "Cocoon" performance presented by the graduates of the HSE Lyceum as part of the cultural program. We invite you to watch the full recording of the event in the "Air" section of the Festival website.
